FDT At Beyond Tellerrand

April 24, 2012 by Alan Klement

beyond tellerand – play is happening right now in Cologne and the FDT team is pleased to both be sponsors and featured in two presentations! Even more exciting, you’ll be able to catch a peek of FDT 5.5 – soon to be released.

On Thursday, @Michael_Plank takes the stage to talk about Workflows for developing next-gen 3D browser games. Michael and his team have been working on one of the most cutting edge flash games: Delta Strike. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, do so at deltastrike.org.

For those with a Childlike Curiosity, check out Nico Zimmerman’s talk and learn about discovering something special in every project. If you’re not familler with Nico’s work, check out what his team at britzpetermann.com is up to.

Both Nico and Michael have a special place in the hearts of the FDT team. Both carried the torch of Product Owner and continue to use FDT in their teams and for personal work. Michael uses FDT to power his team while working in cutting edge 3D games, and Nico uses FDT when working with Haxe. If you decide to attend beyond tellerrand, say hi and if you’re lucky, you’ll also get a peek of them using FDT 5.5.

April 16, 2012 by Carlo Matic

We are proud to announce our next great and big update for FDT 5. Right now it’s a beta version but the final release is planned very soon. It will be a free update for all FDT 5 customers. We added some great new features to this “major minor release” and we’re sure you’ll like them. The main feature we integrated is the new community feature “SWF Bridge”. It allows you to write your own FDT Plug-Ins in ActionScript. Nearly everything is possible, so check out Alan’s blogpost and get started with your first official FDT Plug-In. But there is a lot more in it:

New Features

  • SWFBridge
  • Blackberry Integration
  • ANE Support
  • FDT Setup Wizard
  • Conditional Breakpoints

  • Selectable Debugger SDK
  • Quick Fix to generate a getter and/or setter at Class-Instance
  • Quick Assist to generate a getter and/or setter at Class-Instance
  • Enable choosing the default view player for debug/run dialog

Improvements

  • Automatically rename fields when create getters and setters.
  • Change field to private after setter/getter generation
  • QuickFix for new code should take priority over Assist
  • Profile & Debug without compiling
  • Flexible SDK setups

Extend & Customize FDT With SWFBridge

April 16, 2012 by Alan Klement

At the core FDT has always been about comfort, customization and community. With FDT 5.5, the team delivers a new feature that is a powerful combination of all 3 – SWFBridge.

Create Your Own Plugins For FDT

Update: Check out the SWFBridge microsite.

FDT’s SWFBridge is a platform that allows developers to use Actionscript & Flex to create new features and extend existing ones. Here are a few examples of what you can build using AS & Flex:

Community & Open Source

The FDT team strongly believes in transparency, sharing and open source. With these principals in mind, we have open sourced the API of the plugin as well as provided a few demos and examples.  We encourage the community to create and share what they build as well as provide feedback on how we can make it better.

Getting Involved & SWFBridge Group

Leading up to the FDT 5.5 release, the team will continue to update documentation, examples and demos for everyone to use – things have only just begun.  The best way to learn about new videos, demos, developments or to ask questions, join the FDT SWFBridge mailing list. This is best and fastest way to learn and get involved with SWFBridge.
We’re very excited about the future and we can’t wait to see what the community builds.

Flash Grows Brighter

April 4, 2012 by Alan Klement

Last week, Adobe announced Flash Player Premium Features for Gaming and the news was received with mixed reviews by the community. This mixed reaction concerns us because a healthy Flash ecosystem is very important to the FDT team. We would like to state how we feel about this announcement with the hope that our opinion will help strengthen the Flash community.

The FDT team finds it reassuring whenever Adobe reaffirms it’s commitment to the Flash Platform and the announcement of Flash Player Premium Features for Gaming does just that. For quite some time, we all have known that Flash is a great platform for creating successful games; now Adobe is publicly supporting this opinion by making it part of their business model.

Whenever a company makes a business stake in a market, it then automatically has a vested interest in the success of that market. For example, FDT makes tools for interactive developers but our success does not solely rely on us delivering a quality product for customers to purchase. Because the product we make is part of a larger ecosystem (Flash), we automatically have a vested interest in the success of that Platform – even though making it successful is not our chief responsibility.

We give away ‘FDT Free’ at no charge because we want every Flash developer to have access to a quality Flash IDE; however, we still want to be able to improve both FDT Free and FDT Max. We are a team who has made FDT a part of our livelihood. This means we have to make difficult decisions when balancing between making FDT accessible to everyone and allowing us to come back to work each morning. No doubt, Adobe is in the same position and this is why moves such as Flash Player Premium Features for Gaming make sense. Adobe wants to continue to be able to support the Flash Platform by having dedicated engineers work on it – engineers who have staked their livelihood on coming to work every day to make Flash better.

Adobe has put their money where their mouth is and has placed a very real and powerful stamp of approval on Flash gaming. Publishers will see this and any ambiguity regarding Flash will melt away. When it comes time for a team to decide if their new game will be built using Flash, there will be no doubt that it can be successful – because Adobe has already stated that it can.

We hope our point of view strikes a chord with some community members. The FDT team is looking forward to what lies ahead for Flash gaming and what popular and successful games will come from it.
