As you may have read in the blog post on FDT 5.5 beta, there will not only be loads of new features, but we also improved our license management. Since the introduction of FDT Free we are proud to have an FDT for everyone, but the way to refinance it are the revenues from our splendid FDT Max customers. In these new times, many users asked us for cheaper and shorter license possibilities for full FDT Max functionality. Since many of you are no longer full-time Flash/Flex developers, we can fully understand your concerns and implemented a solution.

With FDT 5.5, we expand our FDT Max license model by adding a software subscription option. A subscription model aims at precisely matching your needs with respect to time – but more on that later. To realize a monthly subscription model, FDT of course has  to synchronize with our license server from time to time. To guarantee a connection between FDT and our license management server please check your firewall settings and make sure that FDT is allowed to use Port 80.

For over eight years we strongly did not want FDT to phone home. We have great trust in all our customers and did not see any reason to have an elaborate license management. We are aware that some users do not want their software to phone home, but with respect to the subscription licenses there is of course no other solution. As a result of all this, FDT will need to connect to our server at least once in 30 days (10 if you’re a subscriber) in order to check if the provided license is still valid. Merely the information on license validity will be transferred! Like before, each license will be valid for your desktop computer and one portable device. Once you have cancelled your subscription, FDT will continue working with the functionality of FDT Free. Due to this change, FDT’s EULA had to be updated. The next time you update FDT you will be prompted to accept the updated EULA.

It is very important to us to explain these changes in advance. We believe in transparency and we hope the community understands this necessary step.
