Aiming to deliver the best product for the interactive community is an ongoing goal for us. Our process is simple: listen to customers, think about their needs and all the while looking ahead to see what is on the horizon.
Our goal and process has lead us to bring FDT to a new level: FDT will become a version-less IDE.
While platforms evolve with new features and capabilities, the community will never again have to wait for an IDE to have a major release before benefiting from them. Updates will be often, even weekly. These updates won’t only apply to new features, but also to bug fixes and performance improvements. The team can now incorporate community feedback faster and we can all build the IDE everyone wants.
To achieve this, FDT will become a subscription only based software. Besides allowing customers to work flexibly, a subscription service allows us to skip the distraction of prepping major releases; instead, we can focus just on making FDT great. There is a subscription for every need: monthly or for 3, 6, 12 or even 24 months. If you have already been subscribing to FDT 5, your license will transfer over to the new FDT with no problems. Simply install the new version of FDT from our download site, enter your license key, and you are good to go.
The FDT team will continue to be transparent and open with the community. We encourage all enthusiastic developers to work with us to continuously shape FDT.
New Features!
Along with the new update functionality, we’ve added new features and improvements.

You can get the latest FDT 5.6 Max here:

This is just ridiculous. Please tell me where can I get FDT 5 Max that I paid for?
Thanks Alan, I do love FDT, and hope you find a solution for this. I have purchased FDT Max since V3, and rely on the advanced feature – the free version would be quite a step back.
I can only hope you ‘upgrade’ your subscription model to be a little more enticing. I would very much like to hear the outcome of any discussion you can share regarding this.
Thanks again….
@Andrew
Just use version ‘FDT’.
@Karim
That solution sounds interesting. We’ll look into it. Also, don’t forget that you still have FDT free – so you’re projects still work fine, you just don’t have the advanced code editing features.
subscription model kills it for me (unfortunately)… I am using FDT since version 1.5… for what I do FDTMax 5.6.2 works just fine so I am not planning to upgrade it to “call home” version
In JIRA, how do I look for existing bugs affecting the new FDT? There is no option for FDT v1.x
Here is a solution for licenses: Buy (or upgrade) for one years of upgrades, and have software stay active without getting updates when it runs out. I’d prefer that to any subscription service. At the moment I feel reluctant to trade in my license for a subscription.

Thanks Alan… The main issue I have with a subscription only service is that I like to own my tool outright because it works with my finances.
If work slows for a few months (or I have a personal project) – I have the added worry of continuing payments & cashflow to support that. At the moment, I am currently working on a personal but potentially commercial project – it’s going to take a while, and I can only afford 1 month subscription ( which gives me another 1 month) – the thought of that makes me feel somewhat cheated because I could have had 6 months free if cashflow was better.
I know if you look at it one way, that subscription fees are somewhat equal to selling licenses… but the thing is my license wont run out when work is slow. I currently have an FDT 5 Max license (not subscription), and have upgraded since 2008 – I preferred that as it gave me security to upgrade when I could afford it.
Best regards – Karim

The plugin version is available now:

@Tobias
This is a new version of FDT and is not a minor release of FDT 5.
@Damien
That is something we definitely thought about that. My suggestions include:
1) Before updating, always check the release notes and see what changed. See if these changes effect your workflow at all.
2) Keeping a backup of what version you downloaded last is always a good idea.
3) When in the middle of a mission critical project, perhaps hold off on any updates which you are not sure about.
The updates will be often, iterative and subtle – we don’t be dropping any major UI or behavior changes without warning or a way to ‘go back’.
Of course, a great benefit of this workflow is that if we do a change which no one likes – we can quickly change it!
@Christian
We’ve been hearing about that and brainstorming on alternatives.
@Ilya
Perhaps the biggest reason for doing this is to get bug fixes out ASAP. Bugs that sit around for months, waiting for a major release, is something we don’t want customers to have to deal with. The plan is, as any issues are discovered, they are fixed and released ASAP.

Well, I hope that now you will focus on the improvement of already existing functionality and fixing of the small but annoying bugs, rather than adding new features for mobile development…
This makes me really sad… I’ve been using FDT for years now and I just love it, but when I see the prices for the new license model compared to the creative cloud master collection of adobe I think it’s definitly time to move back to Flash Builder again. This is like a punch in the face. Thank you, Powerflashers! I mean, it’s ok to change the license model, but the price is far too high, sorry! 🙁
When will the Eclipse plug-in version be available?
Hello,
I think it’s a good news for bug reports, we can have the fix as soon as possible.
But how can a user deal with an update that introduces a new issue, that might be blocking for him? Will there be a way to revert to a previous update?
Thanks, and continue the good work. 🙂
@Alan:
But my some months old FDT Max License (i dont like the subscription thing) will not work for this minor release?
@Karim
FDT 5 Max subscription licenses will work with the new FDT with no additional effort by customers. Anyone wanting to upgrade from a one time, FDT 5 purchase to the new FDT – we offer to double, for free, the amount of time you sign up for.
What about those of us who have bought FTD Max?
